Just a short stroll or drive from Butler's Cottage, the picturesque village of Hawes offers a plethora of local produce, artisan goods, and tasty treats. It's the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere and chat with friendly locals over a brew or a pint. The Hawes waterfall is often described as the most photographed waterfall in the country. Here you can also visit the beautiful art gallery of Stacey Moore, whose work you will see on the walls of the cottage.
While filming at Simonstone, Jeremy Clarkson described Buttertubs Pass as "England's only truly spectacular road!" Who are we to disagree? Turn left out of the cottage and take the thrilling ride of your life up and over the pass taking in spectacular views, breath-taking drops and dare devil twists and turns. In 2014 the pass was used as part of the Tour de France and the hardiest cyclists stall challenge themselves against it today - perhaps you're one!
Step outside and enjoy the peace and tranquility of Hardraw Force. With picturesque walking trails and diverse wildlife, it’s a delightful area to explore right on your doorstep. Privately owned, access is gained from within a very short walking distance of the cottage. Hardraw is England's largest 'single drop' waterfall at over 100 feet.
Askrigg is home to the Yorkshire Dales Brewery, (also known as Wensleydale Brewery) and can be found just a short car ride away. The brewery features a tap, beer garden and shop. Opened in 2023 the brewery brews just 5 barrels at a time and visitors are sure to find a warm welcome and a good beer to slake the thirst after a long day in the hills.
Whether tackling all three peaks of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent within 24 hours or taking a more sedate approach, Butler's Cottage is in the perfect location for those who require a cosy, homely base to depart from and return to. The washer/dryer will no doubt come in handy as well!
Visit the stunning Ribblehead viaduct that carries trains across Batty Moss 104 feet up and across 24 stone arches. Marvel at the Victorian engineering that built this wonder and feel the presence of the 'navvies' who laboured to build it. If you're lucky, you might even see a steam train crossing. Whernside rises up behind the viaduct and a well marked path signals the start of the ascent.
A visit to the nearby Wensleydale Creamery is an absolute must! If it was good enough for Wallace and Gromit, it's good enough for you! Home of the award winning cheese, not only can you take a factory tour but you can also taste samples and then take some back to the cottage to try with a good glass of port in front of the log stove.
Whilst either driving through or hiking around Muker & Gunnerside, look out for a young lad in a high vis jacket sitting aloft a large digger ; it may well be Reuben Owen of 'The Yorkshire Shepherdess' fame. His yard is based there and most of his work is around that area. But don't miss the spectacular views and old mine workings whilst you're looking for him.
A little bit further out but well worth the drive. Not only are the roads approaching Tan Hill visually stunning but the remoteness and vastness is striking. Tan Hill Inn is the highest pub in the British Isles at 1,732 feet (528 m) above sea level. It is also reported to be the most remote. Watch the forecast carefully before planning a visit here; especially in the winter months as visitors becoming stranded is not uncommon!
On the road from Hawes to Ingleton, on the left hand side you will see the imposing signs and buildings that mark the entrance to the famous White Scar Caves. White Scar are the longest network of show caves in England. The guided cave walk lasts around 80 minutes and takes in underground streams and waterfalls, flowstone, prehistoric mud pools, and the huge Battlefield Cavern adorned with thousands of stalactites.
A 30 minute drive takes you to Ingleton where you can take a gentler walk around their famous waterfalls trail. Ideal for younger families or those whose hiking days are in the past. The total trail is 4.3 miles and takes a few hours on the well marked and created paths. There are toilets and refreshment kiosks along the trail to keep everyone motivated.
A little drive out but again, well worth it. Not only will you pass through some of the most beautiful and remote villages and hamlets that North Yorkshire has to offer but you will be rewarded with a visit to Ravenseat Farm, featured on the TV series 'The Yorkshire Shepherdess'. Wonder at how remote it is and how Amanda and Clive Owen managed to raise their 9 children so far away from anything.
